Public Health News

We get it- You are busy. You take care of your family, go to work, cook, and ensure everyone has what they need. They rely on you. They need you. So, you need to make sure that you Care for Yourself!

The Care for Yourself Program at Black Hawk County Public Health is part of the CDC's National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (administered in Iowa by Iowa HHS). The program has been in Iowa for 28 years but is also available nationwide. Find a program near you. The program provides free mammograms, pap smears, and wellness physicals to screen for breast and cervical cancer. Women and persons who have female anatomy are eligible for screening.

Other eligibility for free or low-cost screenings include:

• Having no insurance, or your insurance does not cover screening exams.

• Yearly income is at or below 250% of the federal poverty level. For a household of two, that is $4108/month NET income.
(Add $1070/month for every additional family member.)

• Ages 40 - 64 for breast cancer screening.

• Ages 21 - 64 for cervical cancer screening.

• Certain women who are younger or older may qualify for screening services.

Enrolling in Care for Yourself is free, and participants will receive no bill for their screenings. Whenever possible, the Care for Yourself coordinator sets up appointments with the provider you already know and feel comfortable with. If you don't have a provider, we can help you find one.
