The Environmental Health Program is responsible for mosquito surveillance in Black Hawk County. Specific efforts in the cities of Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Evansdale, while seasonal, are ongoing. Health Officers set, monitor and maintain light traps, and participate in surveillance activities designed to determine if mosquito borne diseases are active in Black Hawk County. This trapping program, completed in conjunction with Iowa State University, focuses on trapping the mosquito species known for carrying two diseases: West Nile flu and the Zika virus.
