Immunizations and Vaccines

Immunization Records & Recommendations

Black Hawk County Public Health is enrolled in the Iowa Immunization Registry System (IRIS), which is a secure statewide database of immunization records. The IDPH and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publish Immunization Recommendations by Age.

Childhood Immunizations

Black Hawk County Public Health’s Immunization Program assures there are vaccinations available for children and adolescents in the program. The Public Health department is responsible for updating vaccine information as it becomes available, and contracts with the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to provide vaccines through their Vaccine For Children Program. Black Hawk County works to address barriers, educate providers on vaccinations, and provides vaccine recommendations for school-age children. The Public Health department also conducts annual vaccination audits with schools and childcare centers to review compliance with vaccine requirements.

Information on how to obtain vaccines and/or well-child services for children 0-21 is available under our Public Health Center services.

Flu Vaccine

Black Hawk County Public Health does not currently provide the Influenza (flu) vaccine for adults. (Read more about childhood immunizations here.) Flu vaccine for all ages is readily available at local pharmacies and provider offices. Getting the flu vaccine causes antibodies to develop in the body and offer protection against the flu (influenza) viruses that are predicted to be most common during the upcoming season.

  • The CDC website provides information on the different types of flu vaccine available.
  • Vaccines.gov can locate a flu vaccine provider near you.
